Liam meets Gaia. And is pretty sure he said something wrong
Bookbag tossed by the door, Liam raided the kitchen, happily filling a plate with whatever snacks caught his attention as he also made himself a Boba to drink. That this place had a machine to do the sealed Boba lids was so cool.
From the entryway, a singular crunch could be heard. Gaia stood, contemplatively eating from a family size bag of Cheeto Puffs. She watched Liam’s conquest with a mild fascination, task of finding more snacks that she liked pushed to the side.
Ear rotating to the sound before the rest of him, Liam looked over to the door to see who was there. "Oh, hi?" he asked, taking in the girl's pink hair. "You're the new girl."
"And you are a cat." She didn't make a move to go into the room. "Hello."
"What?" Liam feigned shock and surprise, turning to see if he had a tail only for it to swish to the opposite side so he couldn't quite catch it. "I'm Liam," he added. "And yeah. I'm a cat." He had his tail wave at her.
The corner of her mouth twitched in amusement. "I am Gaia." Orange dust covered fingers disappeared into her bag for another crisp. "You have been here long?"
Long enough to get kidnaped twice wasn't a polite answer, especially to a new person. But it was Liam's first thought. "About a year," he said instead. "Where are you from?"
"Very far away." Her default response to that question from various enquirers.
Uh huh... Okay then. "I'm from Maine," he pointed up to the ceiling, though that wasn't really north.
Having studied an old map in an abandoned study, Gaia vaguely knew where this was. "What was it like there?"
Liam shrugged, his snack plate nearly full of this and that and a lot of salami. "I liked it. Machias is a small town near the Canadian border. It's a good place."
She nodded slightly. "That is good... would you call this place a good one?"
Liam nodded, "Yeah, I think so. No where is perfect, but that doesn't mean it's not good. The people here mean well and it's a lot better to be here than on your own. There's a couple people here who were on their own before they got here and ended up in some bad places with bad people. And bad stuff still can happen," he thought back to everything he'd been through so far this year, "but that doesn't mean this isn't a good place."
"They are hard to come by. Good places." Everything he said checked out with what Gaia had been told by everyone else she'd encountered. Either they were all very convincing liars, or perhaps she could stay here a while...
A change in topic seemed in order. "What do you like to do here? Most things are very... new to me."
People here could be so weird. "Well... there's video games? And I like building stuff, especially woodworking. And I work on the grounds and doing small repairs part time. And I love being outside, there's always fun stuff to do." That seemed like a good list.
Gaia nodded. “That is good.” Bag of chips in one hand, she turned. “I will see you again. Goodbye, Liam.”
"Uh, bye?" Liam replied, a little confused. What just happened? Did he say something wrong?
