Maya and Thornn have a rematch.

The portal opened and Echo hit the field in a crouch. They'd already targeted her at the same mutant who had beaten her the first time. But her powers weren't all that effective against giant robots and the X-Men were determined that if they had to save the Brotherhood, they'd at least put a few of them behind bars for their crimes.

Besides, Maya had learned a lot from the last time she’d faced Thornn. She’d also had more than enough beat downs in the Danger Room and training with Kyle and Natasha as well as people like Felicia that she was going into this eyes wide open.

She opened up the telescopic batons she’d been training with, leaving off the electric part to start with. If she needed to stun the woman, she would.

“Thornn?” She called out, knowing the woman would already have been aware of her presence the moment she stepped out onto the field. “Keeping a guest waiting is rude, Gabron.”

"Chica. Don't know if you coming back is stupid or brave. But one thing I do know." The cat-like woman turned to face her and flashed a handful of claws. "No rules from el jefe today. Maybe you understand the lesson better if I take the whole eye this time."

“You know, I’ve never met a bad guy who liked to talk as much as you do,” Maya replied, keeping herself steady as she faced off against the cat woman. Before she’d panicked, allowed herself to be drawn into a moving fight where Thornn had the advantage of speed and agility. She wouldn’t do that this time. “Some people might say you’re trying to compensate for something. Not me though, I wouldn’t be so mean.”

"You can keep talking. But I'm carving you up tonight."

“You say that but you’re still talking,” Maya noted, moving with the blow she’d almost missed coming in on her left. She’d also learned that since their last fight. If you couldn’t go pound for pound with your opponent you were better off using their strengths against them, and that meant flowing with their punches and kicks to redirect them outward and away while you took shots where they were suddenly vulnerable. “Also, you forgot I remember how you move now.”

"Oh, how do you want me to move? You a little lesbian and you think you can finger me?" She rushed, and it took off the top of Maya's ear.

Maya flinched at the pain but didn’t allow it to break her concentration. She used the close proximity to flick one of her batons downward, going for a trip as she pulled her body sideways away from Thornn’s claws and into a circling movement to keep her in view.

“Are you trying to make me blush or something? Does that work on anyone other than teenagers?”

"Worked on you last time. You not worried about some more scars?"

“Yeah, well, I grew a clue since then.” Maya was careful to keep Thornn in view at all times, circling the older woman much as two cats might during a fight. She would never have the other woman’s physical advantages provided by her mutation but that didn’t mean she didn’t have a brain and the skill to use it. “Scars are just scars. If I bring you back to answer to the authorities a few scratches won’t mean much.”

"No sense making you wait for the scars then." She kicked a cloud of dirt up in Maya's face and charged in, hitting the distracted woman hard in the chest. The armor in the X-Men uniform was the only thing that kept Maya's chest from being torn open. Thornn hissed in frustration, wrenching her claws back, tearing apart the armor.

Maya recovered from the dirt in her face quickly, especially when it was accompanied by such a charge. She’d trained for this with both Natasha and Kyle. Taking a breath to pull herself together she flicked on the stun part of the baton she’d been training with and rolled sideways and forward, aiming to get behind the other woman and hit her from behind or against the back of her legs.

As the shock batons hit her, Thornn screamed, hobbling back grasping her spasming leg muscles. "Oh, you hurt me. I'm going to make you pay for that."

“Not really interested, thanks,” Maya replied, her steps circling Thornn again, trying to keep herself in place to redirect any move Thornn could make, robbing her of a direct impact if she did it well enough. She didn’t have to take out the woman entirely, just enough so she could tie her up. “Last time was more than enough to learn.”

"You rich puta bitch. You live in the nice mansion on the hill and you pretend you speak for mutants?" She charged, her claws meeting air initially.

Maya moved her baton to push Thornn’s claws away from her, giving her another shock as part of the move as she turned in the opposite direction. She hadn’t quite judged the foot claws well enough and almost stumbled as she felt them rake along her thigh as she lunged sideways. It hurt like a bitch but she couldn’t let it stop her. She brought her other shock baton around and hit the woman in the side with a stronger shock.

Enough of those and she hoped it would drop her.

“You don’t know anything about who I am.” Maya gritted out, deeply offended at the unfairness of that statement. Was this what she sounded like? Fuck, she had some apologies to make when she got back. “Maybe you should stop listening to cult leaders and start thinking for yourself.”

"Or maybe you see things differently when you lose something," she snarled, darting under the batons to open up Maya's left calf with her claws as she rolled, and then lashed out, her foot catching the back of her knee and taking Maya's legs out from under her.

It wasn’t that Maya didn’t feel the slashes from Thornn’s claws, it was that she couldn’t allow them to distract her from the fight at hand. It was a gift of sorts from her power, the ability to drop into a perfect calm that allowed her to focus she might not otherwise have.

She allowed herself to fall and then rolled tightly to take the impact on one shoulder before springing back up.

Thornn was at her back, however, and so she pushed to spring sideways into a twist to get back facing the right way. It was more a cheerleading move than a fight move but you used what you had.

She threw one of her batons at Thornn’s head before aiming the other at center mass.

Thornn's hand snaked out and caught the first baton, but had caught it by the head. The first electric shock ripped through her as the second baton caught her between the eyes. The mutant went down, convulsing helplessly as the shocks raced up and down her nervous system, hair sticking out all over.

Maya moved quickly to pick up both batons, striking Thornn several more times to knock her out before she reached for the bindings she’d been given to tie her up.

They looked like zip ties but she’d been told they’d resist enough pressure to keep a feral mutant contained. It didn’t take her long to lock Thornn’s arms and legs up with them, just in time for the woman’s healing factor to finish off the shock.

“Do us both a favour and stay quiet.” Maya said, signaling to the others that Thornn was down.
