xp_logs(backdated) Wanda and Darcy discuss the layout for the section of offices Team Magic has claimed and make a plan for containing some of the more volatile items, regardless of magical status.
It was the kind of chaos that Wanda, for once, wasn't really responsible for. The kind of chaos that came from any kind of move - the room wasn't empty, it was filled with far too many boxes to be empty. But it was absolutely a blank slate and now she and Darcy had to figure out how to configure things and...
"We're not Avalon," she said to Darcy, as she perched on the edge of a box. "But we absolutely will end up with the occasional volatile item - not always magical in nature but..." Wanda shook her head, thinking back over the years. "It happens quite often. Plus, other occupational hazards tend to come up. So, making the room comfortable and workable is well and good but making sure it's safe and sturdy is a must."
"Absolutely. Are the stories about lead or steel lined boxes containing some magics accurate? If so, might be worth investing in.. I don't know, basically single item lockers we could isolate the most volatile or questionable items in until they'd been studied and marked safe for more general storage? Different materials too, based on things we've come across in the past?" Darcy gestured around the room broadly. "We could isolate a single desk as a dedicated spot for more hazardous materials with the more high risk things closest to it, maybe a few smaller desks for general study with the safer items catalogued and shelved? And.. hm, if Topaz were to take over this room as mostly her domain, we could have a desk here for her, then the more volatile items going back and the general desks and storage on the other side of the room? And then ward it as much as possible to minimize damage."
Standing, Wanda started to walk the room, avoiding everything they'd managed to move in so far. "Some artifacts can be bound by lead or steel, others will react violently. So yes, your idea of storage units crafted out of different materials is a good one. And more than a desk, I think, to isolate and study." She pointed across the hall, to a room that she had started to plan for either her own office or library. Ideas began to form. "We were going to place the more occult minded in the same area. That is an interior office space across the way - that becomes the room of study and storage." She glanced at Darcy with a wry look. "In case anything goes boom. This office and the ones on either side of it can be divvied up between those most inclined to deal with those items. We place the library I've been building in my office across the way as well."
"Yeah, that sounds.." Darcy trailed off, flipping open her notebook to a clean page. "Basically this?" She sketched out a rough room outline, including the storage closet and restroom on either side of the interior space. "So all of you in this space, maybe with an extra desk in case of growth, and then... this storage closet by the hallway is janitorial supplies, so maybe the books safe enough to be open access on that side, and the other side is the bathroom for this side of the hall. Should be safe enough to put the more volatile storage and workspace closer to that, and less of an explosion risk than chemicals might be."
Wanda made an appreciative noise at the drawing, taking it in as Darcy showed her. "That looks perfect, though we'll run it by the rest of the team to get their input on the design. But I feel like this is the most workable set up, allowing for growth and keeping in mind the potential volatile nature of the work we do. Amanda and Topaz will handle any actual warding that will need to be done, of course."
"Awesome." Darcy rubbed her temples as she thought through what still needed to be done. "Rough sort the boxes and maybe move a few desks around, then? Library across the hall, personal effects sorted by name against the wall in here so people can choose their own space.. Direct the artifacts across the hall as they get here? And figure out storage for them, although that's probably going to take a bit to fully sort out."
"We'll need customized shelving, even outside the storage for the more volatile pieces." Wanda was making notes on her phone. "We're already set on most of the general office furniture, but I have some very specific needs for the research library. Not everything, especially when it comes to the occult, can be digitized. I tried once with a particular tome and we had to bury my phone in a lead box."
"Wouldn't want that to happen again," Darcy said lightly. Magic was weird, and the idea of possessed gadgets made her stomach flip uncomfortably. "I will leave figuring out specialized shelving to team magic, then. Clea can order them, or you can send me a detailed list of what and how many. Do we need to get anything else for this area done today, or is it ready for people to come in later and claim desks so they can unpack for themselves?"
Glancing around, Wanda took in the space again, trying to envision it filled with people and everyday things. "I think it's ready for people to come in and claim desks. We'll send everyone the sketches and ideas and edit them as they weigh in with their opinions. It'll be organized chaos for a while but we've certainly worked in worse situations. If you're free in a bit, I'm planning on grabbing dinner after we send this out?"
"Dinner sounds great," Darcy agreed with a smile. "I think we can have everyone mostly settled in early next week, so it shouldn't be much more chaotic than the usual office during the holidays." She put the notepad on a flat surface and snapped a few pictures with her phone, and a few swipes of her finger had them attached to an email asking for input and sent off. "It's unfortunate the place downstairs is only open at breakfast and lunch, but if you want to try something new I'm sure there's something nearby."
