Scott receives a surprise visitor who has something rather disturbing to tell him.
Not talking to Logan didn't mean she wasn't going to talk to anyone. One of the things she'd been told after after her confrontation with Logan was that she could and should talk to a staff member if she had any sort of a problem, issue, or question. She'd tried that, only a little more than two weeks later, with unpleasant results. Who knew what sort of question would get turned over to Scott? She may as well just go to him to start with, and this found her on yet another voluntary visit to Scott's office.
"Come in," Scott said at the knock, and raised an eyebrow, a little surprised by Crystal's appearance. He gave her a quick smile, though, and gestured towards one of the chairs by the window. "Have a seat?" he invited, getting up to take the other chair himself. "What's up?"
"Logan told Yvette that I hurt him," Crystal told Scott calmly, getting right to the point. She would have preferred to open with some sort of pleasantry, but she took "What's up?" as a version of "What did you come to see me about?" rather than "How are you?" She sat down in the offered seat. "He also informed her that because of my title, I treat other people as if they are less than me. He tried to
lead her to the belief that I would look down upon her because of her background."
The smile slipped from Scott's features as he sank into the chair. "I see. You heard this from Yvette, I gather?"
Crystal nodded. "Yes. Thankfully, she came to me with questions that, I hope, I answered to her satisfaction A few weeks ago, Yvette told me about her interactions with Logan. She told me that he was teaching her, that he was patient with her... I did not tell her anything negative about him. Was I concerned about what could happen? Yes, but everything she told me indicated that he has been treating her with kindness. Why would I want to tell her anything negative about someone who is nice to her?"
"... there's the question of the hour," Scott mumbled almost inaudibly, rubbing his hands over his face. He met Crystal's eyes, his expression almost sad. "We just keep giving you more reasons to wonder why you're here, don't we?"
"Oh, I know why I am here," Crystal replied in a calm tone. "I am here to learn, and believe me, Mr. Summers, I have definitely learned many things since I arrived at the school last June."
She had such a wonderfully calm and diplomatic way of slapping one in the face with all the ways the year had been a less than positive experience for her, Scott reflected. "I won't make excuses for Logan," he said. "There are none. I'm glad he's helping Yvette, but the continuing animosity towards you is inexcusable. He may no longer be staff, but there's a standard of behavior required from anyone living in this house, especially an adult."
Crystal nodded. "Yes, and this is why I came to talk to you. This is what I was told months ago, that I should have come to a staff member when I realized that there were issues with Logan's behavior towards me. I made a horrible mistake last time, one that I will not make again. I am now choosing to voice my concern about a" X-Man "resident to the proper authority."
The fact that she'd picked him was telling. Scott nodded. "I'm glad you did," he said. "I'll be honest with you, Crystal - I myself may not be able to do much. I may have to ask the Professor to speak to Logan instead." He hesitated for only a moment; fair was fair, and Logan had tossed out the usual niceties. "Logan is poorly socialized. It's a function of his background - that's a statement, not an excuse. Unfortunately, unlike some of the others who've come to the mansion with similarly difficult backgrounds, he's not taken full advantage of the help that's available here."
Crystal gave Scott another nod. "Do what you feel is right. I did not come to talk to you in an attempt to cause trouble for Logan, only to let you know what happened."
"I understand," Scott said. "The former possibility hadn't occurred to me, and I'm glad you did come to see me." He gazed at her for a long moment, contemplatively. "What bothers you the most about this?" he asked.
Crystal took a moment to think so she could answer properly. "I suppose I am bothered by two things equally. One, Logan truly seems to have ill-feelings towards me. Yes, what I did to him in October was wrong, but he had animosity for me even before then, even when I had not done anything to him. I used to believe that Ms. Dane felt the same way about me, but I was able to talk to her and discover that this was not true. On the other hand, Logan must have a strong feeling of... hate, I suppose, towards me in order for him to tell Yvette such things, which is the second thing that bothers me the most. He is a grown man, an X-Man, unless I am mistaken, and he told a student that her suitemate, who she never had any problems with beforehand, is a horrible person and tried to get her to believe that I did, or would, look down upon her."
"Yvette has been through a lot," Scott said after another long moment. "Her time here, her friends... the people who've been kind to her... I think it means a great deal to her. It's... cruel," he went on, knowing he was being a little bit harsh, but also just, "to try and alienate her from someone she spends a great deal of time around, someone who can be a source of support for her."
"It was cruel to her and it was cruel to me," Crystal replied, looking straight at Scott. "Again, I am just glad that Yvette came to talk to me about her concerns. I told her that although I had not intended to hurt Logan, I had done so, that he had treated me harshly and said rude and insensitive things to my sister, that when I went to talk to him about this, he continued to be rude, and I attacked him. I told Yvette that what I had done was wrong and I would not make excuses for what I did. I did not tell her the details of what I did to him. I do not know whether or not Logan told her, and I did not wish to frighten her unnecessarily. If she had asked, I would have told her, but since she did not..."
"I'm glad that you and she were able to sort things out. That's what's most important here, I think." Scott took a deep breath, then let it out. "As for Logan. I don't know that I am the best person to-" yank back on his leash "-talk to him about remedying his behavior, but I think I'll say something, even so."
With a nod to Scott, Crystal rose. "Thank you for taking the time to speak with me," she said.
Scott nodded tiredly. "Thank you for bringing it to my attention," he said. "It's best that we know about these things, when they happen." He rose, moving with Crystal towards the door. "I'll do what I can."
