While deciding to brave the big mansion on her own, Jan discovers a sleepy Pietro in the library and decides to settle a score.

As the weather improved, Pietro was finding more and more that the big windows in the library made for a far nicer place to read than the relatively small ones in his suite. He lazed in the sun in a far corner, half-asleep with his book nearly slipping from his fingers.

Now that she had been at Xavier's for almost a week, Jan was trying to brave the big new world on her own. She was still mainly sticking to remaining with Terry or Kyle, but since she knew that a telepathic shout would bring all sorts of people to her rescue, she was ready to try a trip on her own. The library seemed like a good place to start. No one really went to the library, did they?

Except that someone was there. Someone who, less than a week ago, had almost killed her. OK, so he hadn't meant to. OK, so he'd apologized. Still... almost killing her was just not cool at all.

A bright spring afternoon was almost tailor-made to be the wrong atmosphere for a Black Company novel, Pietro thought wryly. Still, it wasn't as if he was reading it, really, and the librarian was usually good enough to tolerate a brief nap as long as he didn't start snoring or drop the book on the floor . . . it was something to consider.

Yep. There he was. All alone. Distracted. No way of knowing he was being watched. Jan settled onto a bookshelf and stared, a hunter watching her prey. Ok, he looked tired. Really tired. He was going to fall asleep any minute now and when he did he was going to get what was coming to him. He wouldn't be able to swat her superfast when he was asleep, could he?

Pietro finally made a decision and set the book down on the library table, leaning back slightly in his chair. The sun really did feel very nice.

Yes!!! Jan swooped down and landed on the book, walking around for a few moments. Then she flew up and hovered in front of his face to make sure he was asleep. Assured that he was, Jan grinned and zapped him.

Pietro stiffened, and his eyes snapped open . . . but he hadn't quite been asleep yet, so his hand stayed still. He favored the diminutive girl hovering in front of his nose with a level look and waited, eyebrows slightly raised.

"Um... oops?" Shit. Well at least he hadn't swatted her. "Um... we're even now. So there." She knew he couldn't hear her, but it was just so hard to stay quiet all of the time. Jan flew off, wanting to get away before he changed his mind and decided to flatten her.

Pietro watched her fly off, then snorted quietly and went back to his nap.
