Jono and Mel have an awkward chat while he waits for Paige to finish getting ready.
There had admittedly been two downsides to dating Paige. The first was that he wasn't allowed to set her mum on fire. The second was that she lived with Melody. Which in of itself wouldn't be a problem, if it weren't for the fact that Jono arrived to pick her up for dates on musician time...and Paige....Paige was usually still getting ready when he arrived.
A lot of the time, Melody wasn't around when he was there, but today she was- and Jono didn't know what to do with himself as he sat on the couch awkwardly. "So.....nice weather, eh?"
It had been raining for days.
Mel looked over from where she had idly been working on her laptop and raised an eyebrow. “Sure, fer yer side of the pond I suppose.”
"Paige and Jay said you stayed back in Kentucky?" Jono asked. "Was that....good?"
The idea that her siblings talked about her with him was strange. “It was alright. Good to help out some at home.” She paused for a moment. “I assume yer… good after all that in England?”
"Oh, uh yeah England was great. Good to see the mates again, I think Paige liked the sight seeing....Isle of Man was interesting....definitely gave me new things to consider about how the Otherworld works in the modern era." He chose to ignore the fact that he'd yelled at Paige, that didn't seem like a good thing to mention.
“Well, that’s good then. Glad y’all’re home in one piece.” She typed up a few more lines before sending off her email to a potential client, asking for availability for a meeting with the boss. “Where are ya off to tonight?”
"We're going to a museum and then a concert...I'm....early....do you have any plans?" He idly wondered if it wouldn't be possible for the couch to swallow him whole.
Mel coolly took a sip from her glass of wine, seemingly unphased by the increasing awkwardness of the exchange. "Well, ma hot date cancelled on me, so I've got a night in with my emails m'afraid." She chuckled a little. "His loss, really. Hope y'all have fun. Treat her right an' all that." If anyone could make working on a laptop a stand in for cleaning a shotgun, it was her.
"Yeah...thanks.....also er- having met your mum now....I am......sorry for being a cunt to you." It started slow and awkward and then sped up all at once at the end. Yeah this was not going to be a conversation for the ages. Paige should never learn the finer details.
She nearly spat out her drink. “Christ, yer awful at this.” There was a long moment of silence, before Mel admitted, “I was maybe…. quick t’judge ya as well.”
“Apparently all of my charm and manners were stored in the internal organs I lost. I’m doing my best here.” He shot back instantly, hoping that Paige didn’t hear. He didn’t need another lecture about jokes at his own expense.
“Ah yes, the spleen. Commonly known fer its influence on conversational prowess.” Did he still have a spleen? Mel didn’t really care to find out. “Whatever. I don’t hate you. I figure if yer so keen on stickin’ around in Paigey’s life, we may as well be civil.”
Jono responded as quickly as the thought came to him. Too quick to be anything but genuine. “Of course I’m sticking around. I’m in love with her.”
A moment later he helpfully added. “And I’m friends with Jay, and well there really should be more adults that your siblings can talk to and ask for things from given the lack of a decent one down there so I’ve told Jeb that I’m available if any of them need anything….it’s the least I can do.”
Mel stared at him blankly for a second, processing. “Huh. Alrighty then.”
"I'm not a total dickhead." Jono said, rolling his eyes. "And you're all clearly important to Paige, which means you're important to me."
“Careful there, people might get to thinkin’ you actually tolerate me.” Peace could only last for so long, although her tone was joking in nature.
"Like who? Paige? I don't think she knows I didn't tolerate you." Jono teased.
Mel snorted. “In her defense, she’s been real busy ‘tween school an’ disaster.” Had they ever talked about it, now that she came to think of it? She didn’t think so. Oops.
"Yeah." He said awkwardly. "I really am sorry that you lot have been having to deal with....all that. I hope things ease up soon."
“It’s appreciated. M’sure it’ll all sort itself out. We Guthrie’s always do.”
"Still," He said awkwardly, foot tapping in a steady rhythm. "You shouldn't feel like you have to do it alone."
It was an olive branch. A messy, awkward, constipated olive branch, but a sincere one nonetheless.
That earned him a smile- genuine for the first time. "Yer not so bad Starsmore."
