Darcy & Doug | Early Morning

A restless night of sleep leaves Darcy with a list of questions that only one person can answer.

Darcy didn't usually wake up in Doug's bed on a Monday morning. But with Laurie blowing her off recently and the insomnia she'd been experiencing, when she got the chance she wasn't going to say no. She'd slept restlessly though, a pounding headache and her brain's determination to solve the gaps she'd noticed in her recent memory doing her no favors. More had bubbled up after a routine check of her bank account, and what she had managed to piece together painted a picture she didn't want to believe.

She slid out of bed with some regret, carefully getting ready in the shadows of the rising dawn. Several minutes later she felt sleep-warm arms wrap around her side. "Morning," she said quietly, leaning into the embrace.

Doug was still half-asleep, but he'd been roused by the unexpected absence of Darcy next to him in bed, so he'd come looking for her. "Com'back t'bed," he suggested in a sleep-roughened slurring that mashed words together. "Iss'dark ousside." They didn't have to be at the office for the move for hours yet.

"I need to have a talk with Laurie before her next treatment, and she leaves pretty early this morning for it," Darcy replied gently. "I don't think it'll take too long, but I might be running a bit late to the brownstone. Do you mind letting Kevin and MA know and picking up the breakfast order if I send the info to you?"

"Sure." Doug wasn't really processing much at the moment, mostly just that he wasn't going to be able to convince Darcy to come back to sleep. "'M goin' back t'sleep," he told her, pressing a soft kiss to her cheek.

"I'll make sure your phone has the information you need before I leave, hon." Darcy smile was fond as she watched him shuffle back to bed. She'd rather be in bed too, but right now she needed answers more than she needed the warm comfort of Doug's embrace. The pieces her mind were assembling rose and fell. A connection made here, a drop there, accompanied by a sharp lance of pain that had her hands clenched into the sides of the sink as she breathed through it. Eventually she moved back to the bed, double-checking that she'd sent the updated move plan to the team before forwarding breakfast information to Doug's email and sending him a text reminder about everything.

She studied his sleeping form for a minute, brushing her lips across his and smiling at the sleepy rumble he let out.

"Mm...love you..." Doug murmured as he wiggled further into his pillow, already well on his way back to sleep. He was too gone to realize what he was saying, but in somno veritas, just as much as vino.

Darcy cupped his face with a gentle hand for just a minute before sighing and standing up. She needed to get those answers from Laurie.
